Building a Home

Building a home can be a very stressful, time consuming and expensive project. However, there are many tools and resources out there for first time homebuilders, and for veterans of home construction. The most pertinent aspect of home building in the twenty first century is building greener homes, and making environmentally responsible choices with respect to construction, building materials and energy. Builders across the continent, and indeed the globe, are considering this to be crucial, whether building Arlington Homes, Etobicoke Houses, or Italian Villas, consideration for the planet must come first in terms of planning and execution.

The way we build our homes has a drastic effect on the future, in terms of building materials, architectural and landscape design. Toronto and other Canadian-based companies have emerged as leaders in the field of green technologies for home building. Some of these innovations include 'living roofs' that consist of layers of delicate membrane under a layer of soil that houses different plants and herbs that the homeowner uses in the cooking of meals. The plants not only provide culinary ingredients to those living under the roof, they act as an insulator that is more efficient than standard shingled roofs. This trend, which started in France, is exploding in Europe, and is beginning to gain popularity in Canada. This fact is a positive sign that North American homebuilders have a commitment to protecting our planet for future generations.

Building a green home, with renewable and sustainable energy, will better the chances for resale. More and more citizens have the environment at the front of their minds when it comes to consumption, and young people who will be buying homes in the future will no doubt be looking for homes that do not have a negative impact on the planet. So although the cost of some things in a green home are initially significant, the pay off is well worth the extra expenditure. For example, installing solar panels and maintaining the system of batteries they require is not cheap, yet this decision will ensure the protection of our atmosphere and since there will be no drilling for fossil fuels to run your home, the earth will be protected from the grass down to the buried precious metal. Funds for such a project can be obtained, yet once we destroy the earth's ecosystem it cannot be repaired. This is why making green choices when building a home is so essential.

A great source of cost savings can be found in using local building materials. Not only will this cut building costs, the fossil fuels burned in producing and transporting foreign goods is saved. For instance, building a shower out of stones collected in a local forest can give a grotto feel to the shower, as well as a naturally beautiful look. Or a wood floor or deck can be made using bits of recycled and salvaged wood. The cost for attaining these materials is minimal and the finished product will not only be unique, it will have a great story attached to it. Homebuilders can choose to implement a few green designs or an entirely green home, complete with a garden full of organic vegetables and manual water pumps. Aurora, Vancouver, or Tallahassee, wherever you are building a new home, green is the way to go!
